Teeth whitening without the sensitivity

Whitening can make teeth feel tender for a day or two. A few simple steps before and after keep most patients comfortable.

Close-up of a bright, natural smile

Professional whitening works by lifting stains from inside the enamel. For some people that causes short-lived sensitivity. It’s normal and it passes, but there’s plenty we can do to keep it mild.

Before you whiten

We check for decay, worn enamel and gum recession first, since these can make sensitivity worse. Using a sensitive toothpaste for a couple of weeks beforehand can also help.

During and after treatment

We protect your gums, adjust the gel strength and timing to suit you, and pause if anything feels uncomfortable. For the first day or two, avoid very hot or cold drinks and strongly coloured foods such as coffee, red wine and curry.

Keeping your results

Whitening doesn’t change crowns, veneers or fillings, so we’ll talk about how your result will blend with existing work. Occasional top-ups with custom trays keep your shade bright.
